COMEBACK SAUCE RECIPE
This week, I made amazing steak fries. I also needed an equally delicious dipping sauce. So I created Comeback Sauce. Comeback Sauce is a sweet, creamy, tangy, sweet and savoury sauce that can be used to dip, drizzle, drizzle, or smear on almost any food. It’s not a “comeback sauce” name. It will keep your coming back for more. More. There are more. This delicious sauce allowed me to eat an entire broccoli bunch in one sitting.
What is COMEBACK SAUCE?
The unique sauce was said to have been created in a Greek restaurant in Mississippi. However, it quickly spread across the South. The original sauce was made up of mayonnaise, Heinz Chili Sauce (a tomato-based sauce that is not to be confused with Sweet Chili Sauce), and other seasonings. This addictive sauce has many variations. Each person adds their twist to the original. Heinz Chili Sauce isn’t something I have in my pantry, so I substituted some items to get a similar flavour profile.
A certain Southern fast-food establishment is known for their chicken tenders and their spicy dipping sauce, which is their version of a Comeback Sauce, a spicy mayonnaise-based sauce often served in the South with many dishes especially those that are fried. It’s called Comeback Sauce for a reason, all of you. It keeps you coming back. It has some wicked power or something. We always request an extra or two of the special sauce when we order those tasty tenders. The sauce is mighty tasty, to say the least, and is good served with anything, from Black-Eyed Pea Cakes to shrimp to fried pickles, and would probably even make shoe leather edible. I like dipping sautéed green beans in it. It’s yum, you all.
I’ve made several renditions over the years but took the time to write the ingredients and proportions down for this recipe. It’s a bit spicier but just as addicting, perhaps even more so than the original inspiration from down the road. The amount of spice can be adjusted to preference.
What do you serve it with?
It’s probably more pertinent to ask: What can you pair it with? It can be used as a dip with various foods, including roasted vegetables (shown here with roasted broccoli), french fries, nuggets and chicken fingers, or chips. You can also spread it on burgers, chicken sandwiches, and wrap sandwiches. It can be used as a dressing for salads or to flavour coleslaw.
